obscenity
That which is legally deemed offensive to "accepted" standards of decency or morality.
 
Oedipus complex
In Freudian theory, the sexual attraction of a boy to his mother and simultaneous fear of his father. The male analog of the Electra complex.
 
on the rag
Pejorative, slang term referring to a woman having her period.
 
oocyte
The female gamete; an egg or ovum.
 
oogenesis
The production of oocytes.
 
oophorectomy
The surgical removal of one or both ovaries.
 
opportunistic infection
An illness that is considered rare or otherwise difficult to catch but that can take advantage of a weakened immune system.
 
oral contraceptive
Pills that contain synthetic estrogen and/or progesterone which cause a "false pregnancy" thereby preventing ovulation. Used as a contraceptive, they are commonly referred to as "the pill."
 
oral-genital sex
Sexual activity in which the mouth is used to stimulate the genitals.
 
orchidectomy
The surgical removal of the of one or both testes.
 
orgasm
An intense sensation that occurs at the climax of sexual excitement that is accompanied by rhythmic muscle contractions and intense pleasure, followed by release of sexual tensions. In men, orgasm is usually accompanied by ejaculation.
 
orgasmic platform
The vasocongestion that occurs in the outer third of the vagina during sexual arousal.
 
orgy
A large, and often lavish, gathering of people for the purpose of having group sex.
 
os
The opening of the cervix.
 
outer lips
The fatty pads of tissue lying on either side of the vaginal opening and inner lips. Also known as the labia majora.
 
ovarian follicle
A saclike structure in which an ovum develops.
 
ovaries
The two small organs in the female that produce eggs and hormones; located above and to the sides of the uterus.
 
oviduct
Fallopian tube.
 
ovulation
The release of an egg from the ovary.
 
ovulatory phase
The phase of the menstrual cycle during which ovulation occurs.
 
ova
Plural for ovum; eggs; oocytes; the female gametes.
 
ovulate
To release an egg from the ovary.
 
ovum
Singular for ova; an egg; an oocyte; the female gamete.
 
oxytocin
A hormone stimulates strong contractions of the uterus during childbirth; it is also involved in lactation.
